Biography

Els de Gussem is a Pulmonologist and Assistant Professor of Internal Medicine at the University of Manitoba.

She attended medical school at Erasmus University in Rotterdam in The Netherlands. She did her respiratory residency training in St Antonius Hospital, which is where the Dutch HHT Centre is located. During her residency she developed a special interest in Hereditary Hemorrhagic Telangiectasia (HHT).

In 2007 she was offered an HHT fellowship in St Michael’s Hospital in Toronto with Dr Faughnan. During this year they studied pregnancies in women with HHT. Over the past years, she has published several papers on a variety of aspects of HHT. For her research and clinical achievements for persons with HHT she received the Robert I White Young HHT Clinician of the Year Award in 2009 and the Nick Anthonisen Award in 2019.

Since 2019 the HHT Clinic in Winnipeg has been recognized as an HHT Center of Excellence by Cure HHT.
